About Sam

“My name is Sam Pillion, and I am a Sales Rep at Divided Sky Roofing and Exteriors. I have been working in the roofing industry for over three years now and have loved every part of it. I started out working for a roofing company in Magnolia, Texas back in 2017 as a summer job and quickly sought after working for one here in San Marcos.

“Growing up I was the youngest of three with two older sisters. You can imagine what that was like… but we’ve always been a really close family, and I am thankful for all of them. I played basketball in high school, and we even won the State Championship my sophomore year!

“Currently, I am a full-time student at Texas State University studying Criminal Justice Law Enforcement (don’t mess with me!!!!). I will be graduating in May of 2021 and am looking forward to the next chapter of my life. My plan after college is to work full time within the roofing industry and continue to service the people of the great hill country area.

“I have a three year old dog named Jax who I rescued back in 2017. With my free time (what is that?) I enjoy hanging out with my friends, taking my dog to the river, and exercising.”

The Problem: Hail Damage

Whenever there is a hailstorm in your area it’s a good idea to find out quickly if your roof sustained any hail damage. These “dings” to your shingles can cause potential repair issues in the future. Having a local roofer inspect your roof can not only tell you if have hail damage, but a well-trained roofer should be able to help you determine if you should file an insurance claim.

Recently, we helped a homeowner do just that. Having former insurance adjusters on staff, our salespeople are taught to accurately recognize hail damage. This allowed us to provide an honest recommendation that they reach out to their insurance to see if they would cover a full roof replacement.

Here’s a look at the damage:

After inspecting a roof, we try to make an insurance claim as easy for you as possible. Divided Sky will be there to help through the entire process. We know that not only can your lives be busy but dealing with insurance companies is a foreign adventure to many. When you file a claim, they will send out an adjuster to your home to do an inspection for damage themselves, and we will meet them at the appointment to advocate on your behalf. Once approved, we can handle everything with your insurance from there!

The Result: A New Upgraded Roof!

Insurance companies will only cover in-kind materials of your current roof. We like to provide the opportunity for our insurance customers to get better materials and a better warranty by offering these upgrades for only $1 or $2 (depending on the option). This particular homeowner was able to upgrade their 25-year, 3-tab shingle roof to a 50-year, architectural shingle roof with our highest warranty for only an additional $2. In the end, their entire out-of-pocket expense was their deductible + $2!

Boost Your Roofing Knowledge: Metal Roofs vs. Asphalt Shingle Roofs

So, you’re due for a new roof. Whether from a bad Texas hailstorm, spring wind damage, or time has simply taken its toll, it’s an experience most people go through only once or twice in their lifetime. Not all roofs are created equal though, and oftentimes homeowners can be overwhelmed when making some key decisions about one of their home’s most vital components. One question we often get is on the debate between a shingle or metal roof.

Although the asphalt shingle continues to be the most common roofing material, metal roofing has been rising in popularity for some time now. There are many different types of both metal and shingle roofs, so for our purposes we are going to be comparing specifically standing-seam metal and architectural laminate shingle roofs, our most popular roofing systems.

We’ll go through three key differences (there are several others our team members can go over with you at your appointment). These differences are:

  • Appearance
  • Durability
  • Cost

Appearance

When it comes to appearance, both metal and shingle roofs offer a variety of colors, but you’re going to pay a fair amount to upgrade your metal roof from the standard galvalume look. However, your color options are almost limitless with metal roofs, and matching your roof color to the siding of your house has become so aesthetically appealing these days it can help with the resale value of your home.

When it comes to asphalt shingles, you typically won’t have to pay extra costs for different colors, but you are a bit more limited in your options. Many people prefer the more traditional style/look of an asphalt shingle though, and because of that manufacturers are beginning to offer more and more options. Either way, if you live in a community with an HOA, make sure you consult with them before making any changes.

Durability

The roofing industry has come a long way in a relatively short period of time with regard to durability. A standing-seam metal roof is designed to expand and contract with changes in the weather making its durability one of the main advantages to this type of roof. It can not only last anywhere between 40-70 years but is essentially maintenance free under most circumstances.

On the other hand, due to recent advances in technology, top-of-the-line laminate shingles are seeing 25-30+ years when well-maintained and Mother Nature doesn’t take too much of a toll. Although not quite like a metal roof, the laminate shingle needs few repairs over time if properly installed.

Cost

Lastly, who could forget cost? When comparing a metal and shingle roof, one of the biggest concerns in the final decision for anyone is the expense. There are a few things to keep in mind when considering expense.

The difference between the two styles isn’t nearly as wide as one may think, especially when considering the added variety and duration of the two. The up-front cost definitely leans in favor of the asphalt shingle, but the overall cost through the years begins to balance out with the longevity and durability of a metal roof. It may be good to think about factors such as how long you plan to live in the home, your current financial situation, or which you think could help or hurt the resale value of your home.
